How I use AI

As a small business owner, I use AI as my personal assistant. When I use ChatGPT, I think of a super smart, well-read, library science graduate. This artificial person can research anything and pull together answers at incredible speeds. They are knowledgeable in an amazing number of topics. But they are not always correct. Their core information may be wrong, they may interpret their data incorrectly, or they may just be flat out having a bad day and have a hallucination. They can mimic any writing style, so I ask for a specific style – maybe a subject matter expert with 10 years of experience or a new person just out of college.

My Writing Process

I frequently write my article or other copy first and set it aside. I then ask my virtual person to write it. I may ask my virtual person to create an outline and provide sources of why points were included. I then review their version and compare it to my original version. I change my original version to include, exclude, or expand as I think appropriate. I do the critical thinking, which AI does not do well.

Transparency

I generally include an AI statement on documents I publish, for transparency.

Generative AI for images

I also use Generative AI tools like Adobe Firefly and Adobe Express to help with images. Sometimes I hire someone to generate the images or marketing materials with AI tools.
